Mission October - NLCS, Game Two

Miguel Montero and Jeff Salazar get the start for the D’backs.

Recap

An early pitchers duel saw both teams scoreless thru 5 innings.  Shane Victorino doubled to lead off the Phillies half of the 6th.  Victorino proceeded to steal 3B, but was then picked off and the pitchers duel continued.

In the 8th, Jimmy Rollins lead off with a single and then stole second.  Ryan Howard launched a 2 out 2 run HR to give Philadelphia a 2-0 lead.

The Diamondbacks retaliated in the bottom of the 8th.  Mark Reynolds’ 2 out double tied the game 2-2.  JC Romero was brought in to preserve the tie.  Jeff Cirillo pinch hit for Jeff Salazar but grounded out weakly, ending the threat.

In a 2-2 game, Doug Davis was still on the mound in the 9th when Carlos Ruiz’ solo home run gave the Phililes a 3-2 lead.  The Diamondbacks continued to battle, loading the bases in the bottom of the 9th with 1 out.  Stephen Drew tied the game with a fly ball to center, but Eric Byrnes was then retired to send the game to extra frames.

Arizona showed life in the 10th when Tom Gordon walked leadoff batter Quentin Jackson.  Gordon cruised thru the rest of the 10th unscathed.

The Phillies finally compiled an insurmountable lead in the 13th.  Pat Burrell lead off with a walk vs. Doug Slaten.  Ruiz doubled and Jayson Werth followed with a 2 run double of his own.  Victorino added an insurance run with an RBI single.

The six finger bandit Antonio Afonseca preserved the 6-3 lead with a 1-2-3 13th inning.  The series moves back to Philadelphia with the Phillies in a commanding 2-0 position.
