Mission October - Padres vs. Phillies, Game Three

The series shifts back to San Diego tied, with Padres ace and likely Cy Young award winner Jake Peavy on the mound.  What would seem like a sure win for San Diego may not be.  Peavy struggled in his two prior post-season starts, and his performance in the elimination game vs. the Rockies was lackluster.  Wes Helms drew the 3B start in game three with deadline acquisition Kyle Lohse on the mound for Philadelphia.  An unlikely scenario has developed in San Diego as there is rain in the forecast.

Today’s lineups are:

Philadelphia
SS Rollins
RF Victorino
2B Utley
1B Howard
CF Rowand
LF Burrell
3B Helms
C Ruiz
P Lohse

San Diego
RF B. Giles
LF Hairston
3B Kouzmanoff
1B Gonzalez
SS Greene
C Bard
2B Blum
CF Sledge
P Peavy

Recap

The Phillies jumped all over Padres ace Jake Peavy in the 1st, batting around and plating 5 runs.

Josh Bard drilled a solo shot in the 2nd to cut the lead to 5-1.  The rain picked up in the 3rd, causing a 49 minute delay.  Following the delay, Peavy could not continue.  Justin Germano relieved him and escaped the inning unscathed.

The Padres got back in the game in the bottom of the 3rd.  Kevin Kouzmanoff’s RBI groundout and Adrian Gonzalez’ 2 run homer brought the Padres back within 1, 5-4.

In the 5th, Brian Giles lead off with a single.  Scott Hairston followed with his 3rd hit of the game.  Kouzmanoff had another RBI groundout, tying the game 5-5.  Gonzalez singled to CF, but Aaron Rowand threw a strike to the plate.  Carlos Ruiz had the plate completely blocked and Hairston was out.  Khalil Greene gave the Padres the lead with a shot to the gap, scoring Gonzalez, but Greene was out trying to advance to 3B.

With two runners on and one out in the 6th, Joe Thatcher relieved Germano to face Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.  Thatcher gets Utley, but walks Howard.  Rowand’s single then scored two Phillies, giving them a 7-6 lead.

After a one out single in the 8th, the Phillies brought in Brett Myers for a 5 out save.  Myers proceeded to retire all 5 batters he faced and the Phillies took the game 7-6.

Jake Peavy disappointed again in the big game.  After throwing just 57 pitches, could Peavy return for a potential game 5?  First, the Padres would have to win game 4 with Jack Cassel on the mound.  The series continues tomorrow in San Diego with Philadelphia up 2 games to 1.
