Recap

Kyle Kendrick is pitching for the Phillies tonight.  Chris Young takes the mound for San Diego, and the Padres
faithful hope they see the Young from the first half of the season.  Young was 8-3 with a 2.00 ERA before the All-Star break, but struggled with back and oblique injuries after that.

The Padres came out swinging in game two.  Kevin Kouzmanoff’s single and Adrian Gonzalez homer in the game’s first frame gave them the early lead.  The Phillies matched them with two runs in the bottom of the first, on RBI singles from Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell.

San Diego touched Kendrick again in the 3rd inning when Kevin Kouzmanoff drove in his third run of the game, a 2 out 2 run homer to left field.

Kendrick helped his own cause with an RBI double in the 4th, the third hit by Philly pitchers in the series.

Carlos Ruiz smashed a 2 run home run in the 6th to give the Phillies a 5-4 lead.  Kendrick continued the hot Phillies hurler’s hitting with another double and Jimmy Rollins followed with an RBI single.

Terrmel Sledge’s made it a one run game in the 7th with a home run.  The Padres broke out in the top of the 8th.  Brian Giles’ leadoff double chased Kendrick.  Kouzmanoff tripled to tie the game and Gonzalez doubled to give San Diego a 7-6 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, Heath Bell survived a leadoff single by Aaron Rowand to preserve the one run lead.

Trevor Hoffman pitched a 1-2-3 9th to send the series back to San Diego tied 1-1.

Kouzmanoff was the star of the night, driving in four runs and missing the cycle by only a single.  Doug Brocail gets the win with a perfect inning in relief of Young.  Young’s struggles put his status in doubt for any further starts in the series.
