Mission October - Padres Playoff Roster

We’ll never actually know who Bud Black would have chosen for his playoff roster, but we can make some assumptions.  Brady Clark and Jason Lane are assumed unavailable due to roster limitations.  The Padres likely lineup would be:

RF Brian Giles
LF Scott Hairston
3B Kevin Kouzmanoff
1B Adrian Gonzalez
SS Khalil Greene
CF Mike Cameron
C Josh Bard
2B Geoff Blum
P Greg Maddux

I chose to go with 6 reserve batters (11 pitchers).  Michael Barrett is the backup catcher.  Morgan Ensberg, Marcus Giles and Oscar Robles are the infield reserves.  With Mike Cameron iffy, I carried Terrmel Sledge as well as Drew Macias.  The other options would have been Craig Stansberry and/or Brian Myrow.  Had Cameron been healthy, Myrow would likely have made the team instead of Macias.  Personally, I would prefer Craig Stansberry to Giles or Robles, but Bud Black didn’t.

On the pitching side, the staring pitchers (in order) are Greg Maddux, Chris Young, Jake Peavy and Jack Cassel.  Brett Tomko is unavailable.  Cassel gets the nod as #4 over Justin Germano due to Cassel’s end of year status in the rotation, so we’ll instead carry Germano as a long reliever.  Trevor Hoffman and Heath Bell assume their usual positions, with Cla Meredith, Doug Brocail, Joe Thatcher and Justin Hampson filling out the squad.

The pitching matchups and schedule look like this:

10/3 – Game One at Philly – Greg Maddux vs. Cole Hamels
10/4 – Game Two at Philly – Chris Young vs. Kyle Kendrick
10/6 – Game Three at San Diego – Jake Peavy vs. Kyle Lohse
10/7 – Game Four at San Diego – Jack Cassel vs. Jamie Moyer
10/9 – Game Five at Philly – Maddux or Young vs. Cole Hamels

The Phillies had stated their intentions to use the above rotation had Lohse not been used in relief in game 2.  On the Padre side, the decisions would be who to start in games 4 and 5 (if necessary).  We discussed above why Cassel is pitching game 4.  Game 5 could be either Young or Maddux.  Young struggled down the stretch and could be at a decided disadvantage pitching in Citizen’s Bank Park.  If he fared well in game 2 he would likely be the choice for game 5, if not Maddux gets the ball.
